What are our Members doing?

On May 25, 2017 two Chicago Area Chapter members were inducted into the Illinois Aviation Hall of Fame, Cynthia Madsen (lower left) and Tina Thomas (lower right).

Two NCS 99s Chapters, the Chicago Area Chapter, and the Wisconsin Chapter, met together in August, 2015, for a wonderful presentation about the WASP from WWII, led by Chicagp Area Chapter member Marie Spear.  Pictures follow, and there is now a copy of the WASP Handbook from 1943 under the HISTORY heading.  Thank you, Marie, for a great reminder of our heritage.

Here's Marie!

                             INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE IN MUNICH

Four Chicago Area Chapter 99s and one 49 1/2 were able to represent the chapter at the International Conference in Munich, Germany in July, 2015.  Great news is that our Chicago Area Chapter member Leslie Prellwitz was elected to the 99s International Board of Directors!  Congratulations, Leslie!   Here are a couple of pictures of Leslie and her 49 1/2 Grant, the first at the Royal Castle Neuschwanstein on a pre-conference tour, and the second with member Rita Adams at the Hofbrauhaus in Munich, a spot most of the conference attendees enjoyed thoroughly.  P.S.  You'll have to ask Grant about his, er, "friend" on his shoulder!

---------
A second bit of good news is that our longtime member Joan Kerwin was presented with the 99s Award of Achievement for Contributions to the Ninety-Nines at the Thursday night banquet.  A full page article about Joan's numerous contributions to the 99s was published in the Conference Program.  We were all delighted that Joan was able to attend this presentation.  SEE A PHOTO OF JOAN AT THE CONFERENCE IN THE SEPTEMBER, 2015 AIR NEWS!!

Also at the Banquet, AEMSF Trustee Co-Chairman Peggy Doyle presented CAC member Ellen Herring with a silver Amelia Earhart medallion engraved with her six years of service as an AEMSF Trustee as Ellen ended her two terms on the Trust.

Here's a photo of Ellen at the Royal Castle Neuschwanstein.

Following are some additional photos from the Conference and other spots in Germany:

FUN AT THE WELCOME RECEPTION!

Shelley Ventura, Aux Plaines Chapter and "auxiliary" (unofficial) member of the Chicago Area Chapter, has a good time dancing with part of the young men who performed at the Welcome Reception.

Ninety-Nines Pat Theberge, Rita Adams, and Virginia Harmer stop long enough to pose for this picture.

POST CONFERENCE----

After the conference, Ellen and Shelley took a brief post trip to Berlin, where Shelley had lived as a child in the 1970s.  She hadn't been back and wanted to see her old home and other changes since the wall came down.

Many Chicago Area Chapter members attended the annual Illinois Aviation Hall of Fame Banquet in Rockford on May 14, where long time member Beverlee Greenhill was posthumously inducted.  The Illinois Department of Transportation's Division of Aeronautics and IAHOF President Carol Para made the presentation.  Beverlee's daughter Stacy, a past member of our chapter, accepted the award on her mother's behalf.

But that hasn't stopped:
Diane C from getting her flight review....
Madeleine from flying to the Strongbow restaurant in Valparaiso, Indiana, several times....
Mary Lou from making flights to her Sunday Morning Breakfast Club almost every week....
     Gail L from doing checkrides....

Look who attended the North Central Section Meeting in Kentucky in September!  All these lucky CAC 99s, and more:

Rita, Madeleine, Sharon, Donna, Leslie, Joan, Marie, and Ellen O.  They all had a fantastic time and it was a great Section meetiing!

Leslie and Grant enjoyed a great meal!

Wayne and Chairman Donna in the costumes of the day.  Spot those poodles and saddle shoes!

See these pilots of "yore" in costume!  Doesn't Madeleine make a great Rosie the Riveter?

Rita is enjoying a good time with a few other familiar people from the North Central Section!  Who do you recognize???

Okay, so not EVERYBODY was from the North Central Section.  Here is Joan with Maureen Kenney, from California, who was representing the 99s International Board of Directors.  It was great to have her here!

Oh, look at who won the Bubble Gum Blowing contest!!!  Our own Ellen O about ready to burst!

Six Chicago Area Chapter delegates represented our membership at the Ninety-Nines International Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana in July.  JULY?  New Orleans in July?  Yes, it was wonderful!  Early morning and late evening walks were quite tolerable, and air conditioning made our meetings pleasant.

Some drove, some came on the airlines and some flew themselves.  Diane and Roger flew their plane and landed for an overnight in Memphis on the way down.  Diane caught this photo.

THE WELCOME RECEPTION was held at the newly refurbished Shushan - New Orleans Lakefront Airport.  It was redone in 1930s decor and was fun to explore.  Here are some pictures of the Airport:

One cannot go to the French Quarter without stopping for a beignet and chicory coffee at the Cafe du Monde.

At the Friday Amelia Earhart Memorial Scholarship luncheon three of the 2014 AE Scholarship winners were present and received their certificates.  (See picture under "Scholarships".)

THE BUSINESS MEETING---

The most important item to report at the Saturday business meeting was that Mary Wunder, Chairman of the Endowment Fund, revealed that the Endowment Fund has reached its $1,000,000 goal!  This means, that while the Trust will continue to grow, the earnings can be used to fund other 99s projects.  The first income will likely be used for the outdoor staircase at 99s Headquarters in Oklahoma City, which has seriously deteriorated.

The business meeting required voting by the delegates.  Here Joan, Ellen, Donna, and Leslie hold up their voting cards!

At the business meeting, six proposed by-law amendments were presented to the delegates.  The first four by-law changes were basically housekeeping, and those amendments passed unanimously.   The fifth by-law amendment, to rename Associate members to be “Future Women Pilots”, was not supported by the Chapter, and at the pre-comm session earlier it was indicated that very few people wanted to return to that title.  So it was suggested that the name be changed to what those members are:  “Student Pilots”.  This was passed as amended.  Future materials produced within the 99s should be changed to reflect this new title. The sixth by-law amendment, to allow Student Pilot members voting rights at the International level, was not supported by the Chicago Area Chapter, but was ultimately passed by the required 2/3 majority vote.

THE SATURDAY NIGHT AWARDS BANQUET---
The successful conference ended with the Saturday night awards banquet, with a black and gold/mardi gras theme:

The June Chapter Meeting of the Chicago Area Chapter was held at the Fox River Airport, Rochester, Wisconsin.  New officers were installed.  (See CHAPTER OFFICERS.)

The program was a tour of the facilities of the Champion Aircraft Company there.  Our own Chapter Secretary Jill Mann is employed there as a quality control specialist.  The program was presented by Dale Gauger.  Both are pictured here during his presentation.

Many Chapter members, 49 1/2s, and other guests joined us, and posed for this picture.  You might notice one of the company's beautiful products, a Super Decathlon, in the background.

We are hoping a 99s role will be in the future for Ellen O's granddaughter, Erin, 12, who excitedly tried out the interior of the Super Decathlon:

Member Marie S looked over another plane under construction.  Marie recently started a new job at the Kenosha Airport.

Our thanks to Dale and Jill and the American Champion Aircraft Corporation for the wonderful tour.  For further information about the company, see http://amerchampionaircraft.com

The May, 2014 Monthly Chapter meeting at Pilot Pete's brought us a surprise guest, the new Governor of the North Central Section 99s, Minnetta Gardinier, from the Iowa Chapter.  We were delighted to see her and welcome her back any time!  She hopes to visit all the NCS Chapters during her tenure as Governor.

Here are pictures from the meeting:

But just because she won an award for black and white didn't mean she didn't have a good color picture too!  Here it is:

Ruth Frantz is inducted into the International Forest of Friendship in June, 2013.

Here's Ruth's story in her own words!  Enjoy!

International Forest of Friendship 2013

On Friday, June 21, 2913, the first day of summer, Bob and I drove to Atchison, Kansas, the location of The International Forest of Friendship.  Registration and the meal events were centered on the Atchison Heritage Center and our Super 8 Motel was about one block from there.

Friday evening a cocktail party was held and we had the opportunity to meet most of the other honorees.  On Saturday morning the honorees were bussed to the Forest.  I was honored to be inducted into the Forest by The Chicago Area Chapter of The Ninety-Nines and Bob Frantz was sponsored into the Forest by me.  We took our place in the chairs set up in the Fay Gillis Wells Gazebo along with the other inductees or their representatives.  There was time then to walk the sidewalks among the trees to view the name plaques.  Soon there was a parade of Boy and Girl Scouts carrying flags which were placed near every U. S. State’s tree as well as the trees for the foreign countries represented.  The Star Spangled Banner was sung followed by My Country Tis of Thee and the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States complete with a formal color guard. Linton Wells read the biography of each honoree and Kay Baker presented each honoree with a certificate of the occasion.

Back at the Heritage Center lunch was served.  General Douglas Fraser, who was one of the honorees, spoke about his aviation career.  He was a graduate of The Air Force Aviation Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado and one of his duties had to do with working with Haiti in the wake of the earthquake there.

After lunch the honorees and attendees were treated to a bus tour of Atchison Historical Sites.

Saturday evening a superbly delicious prime rib dinner was served and the program of the evening consisted of attendees telling about their most memorable flight.  Bob told about the time our Arrow engine quit while flying IFR at night, which turned out to end successfully and became a learning experience about induction icing.  I remembered flying the leg from Point Barrow Alaska along the coast of the Arctic Ocean where we could see the ice cap and then landing at Deadhorse Airport at Prudhoe Bay.

We were very impressed by the hospitality we received from Linda and Linton Wells, Kay Baker and her committee and the many volunteers who organized a delightful weekend in Atchison, Kansas.

Thank you very much to The Chicago Area Chapter of The Ninety-Nines for the honor of my induction into The International Forest of Friendship, 2013.  I very much enjoy having my name plaque in The Forest.

Sincerely,

Ruth Frantz
